Identified through a lithograph in George C. D. Odell's *Annals of the New York Stage*, this daguerreotype shows Emma Gillingham Bostwick in a half-length, three-quarter view turned toward the right. It was made in the 1850s at the New York studio of Mathew Brady, who later became known for his Civil War portraits. The gold toning warms the silvery image and adds some durability. Numbers scratched on the face and back of the plate are studio marks that show how the plate was logged and handled. The plate later passed to the U.S. War College and entered the Library of Congress in 1920.
