A handwritten note scratched into the back of this plate reads "Atchinson, Pres. of Senate," which points to David Rice Atchison, the Missouri senator who served as president pro tempore of the Senate in the late 1840s. He later became a footnote in American history for holding the presidency for a single day, March 4, 1849, because the inauguration of Zachary Taylor fell on a Sunday. The sitter appears in half-length, turned three-quarters to the left, and the record credits the image to Mathew Brady's studio, which made many portraits of national political figures in this period. The gold toning, applied after development, gives the silvery surface its warm tone and adds some durability.
