Someone scratched "Dr. Blakeman" into the face of this plate, a personal touch that sets this half-length portrait apart from many studio sittings of the period. Rufus Blakeman is shown turned three-quarters to the right, facing front, with his hands folded in his lap. The daguerreotype came from the studio of Mathew Brady, whose firm made portraits of many prominent sitters in the 1840s and 1850s, and the plate was gold toned to deepen its tones and strengthen the surface. Its later reproduction in the *New England Medical Monthly* in 1892 suggests Blakeman's medical work was still remembered decades after the sitting.
