Few daguerreotypes of the financier August Belmont survive, and this half-length portrait shows him turned three-quarters to the right, with the side whiskers fashionable among New York men of the period. Belmont (1813-1890) arrived in New York in 1837 as the agent of the Rothschild banking house, and he became a leading figure in American finance and, later, in the Democratic Party. The gold toning on this half-plate was a common finishing step that warmed the silver image and helped protect its delicate surface. The plate carries the Mathew Brady studio's production, linking it to the busy portrait trade of mid-century New York.
