Few daguerreotypes in this group name their sitter as firmly as this one, which is identified as Sesto Benedetti, a New York stage figure whose likeness survives in a lithograph by François d'Avignon reproduced in Odell's *Annals of the New York Stage*. He sits turned three-quarters to the right, with a full beard, a large ring, and a figured waistcoat, a pose that presents him as a man of some standing. Made between 1844 and 1860 in Mathew Brady's studio, the plate has gold toning that warms its silver surface, and numbers scratched on its face and back point to the studio's own record-keeping.
