Seated in a chair and turned three-quarters to the right, Horace Greeley wears a tall hat and rests a folded newspaper in his lap, a fitting prop for the founder of the New-York Tribune in 1841. The full-length pose, with a carpet visible beneath him, shows more of the sitter and his surroundings than the head-and-shoulders portraits common at the time. Made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1844 and 1860, the plate reflects the long exposures daguerreotypes required and the gold toning that warmed its silver surface. Greeley later ran for president in 1872.
