Aaron Vanderpoel, identified on the plate's back as a judge, sits in this half-length portrait turned three-quarters to the left, with full side whiskers framing his face. The image is a half-plate daguerreotype made in the Mathew Brady studio sometime between 1844 and 1860, when the process was the most popular way to sit for a likeness. Its gold toning, applied to the silvered copper plate, deepened the tones and protected the surface. The plate's back carries a handwritten notation and a record of transfer to the U.S. War College in 1920, before it entered the Library of Congress.
