Amos Kendall, who served as Postmaster General under Andrew Jackson, appears in this half-length daguerreotype turned three-quarters to the left. Mathew Brady's studio made the plate sometime between 1844 and 1860, when Brady was building his reputation photographing Washington officials and other national figures. Gold toning, applied after development, warmed the image and strengthened its surface. Scratched inscriptions on the face and back of the plate identify the sitter and his office, and a 1920 transfer notation shows the plate later entered the U.S. War College collection.
