Once catalogued under the name G.W. Cramp, this half-plate daguerreotype shows George Washington Crawford, the Georgia politician who served as governor from 1843 to 1847 and later as Secretary of War under Presidents Taylor and Fillmore. Mathew Brady's studio made the plate in the mid-1840s, when daguerreotypes had become the fashionable way for public men to be pictured, and the gold toning warms the silvery surface. The identification rests on an engraving of the sitter that served as the frontispiece of *The American Review* in July 1849, which allows the portrait to be matched to a known public figure.
