Thomas Corwin, an Ohio lawyer famous for his humor on the campaign trail, went on to serve as governor, U.S. senator, and secretary of the Treasury, and this half-length portrait shows him turned three-quarters to the left. It was made at Mathew Brady's studio in the years between 1844 and 1860, when the daguerreotype was the leading portrait process. The gold toning helped sharpen the image and soften its silvery highlights. Numbers scratched into the face and back of the plate, along with a 1920 transfer from the U.S. War College, trace the picture's path into the Library of Congress collection.
