Thomas Corwin stands full length in this plate, turned three-quarters to the left beside a draped table, with a backdrop or reflector screen filling the left edge. Corwin, an Ohio lawyer and politician, served in the U.S. House and Senate, was Secretary of the Treasury under Millard Fillmore from 1850 to 1853, and later governed Ohio and served as minister to Mexico. The scratched inscriptions on the plate name him and his home state, and the gold toning and trimmed corners are typical of the half plate portraits made in Mathew Brady's studio during the 1850s.
