Samuel Hanson Cox appears here in a half-length study, turned three-quarters to the left, with the warm, even tones that gold toning gave daguerreotype plates. Cox (1793-1880) was a Presbyterian clergyman in the New York area and a public voice on the religious and reform questions of his day. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1844 and 1860, when Brady's rooms drew many prominent sitters. Numbers scratched on the back and a 1920 transfer to the U.S. War College trace the plate's passage through several hands before it reached the Library of Congress.
