George Washington Parke Custis, the adopted grandson of George Washington and later the builder of Arlington House across the Potomac from the capital, sits in this half-length daguerreotype turned three-quarters to the left in a white waistcoat. The plate was produced in Mathew Brady's studio in the mid-1840s, when the daguerreotype was the dominant portrait process and sitters often came to studios like Brady's to be recorded in sharp, mirror-bright detail. Custis's own name on the sitter label was confirmed through a newspaper identification in The Atlas of 1849, and the plate's gold toning helps preserve the fine tonal range of the original image.
