Turned three-quarters to the right, with his head angled the other way and both hands resting on a cane, the painter Asher Brown Durand sits for this half-length daguerreotype. Durand (1796-1886) was a leading figure of the Hudson River School and later served as president of the National Academy of Design. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio, which drew many artists and public figures in the 1840s. Gold toning gives this half-plate image its warm, silvery depth and helps protect the delicate surface.
