This half-length portrait is notable for its uncertain identity: the record names the sitter as Henry Peters Gray, a painter, but also lists Washington Irving as a possible alternative. The plate dates from between 1844 and 1860, when Mathew Brady's studio in New York was making portraits of many prominent people. Gold toning, a common finishing step of the period, strengthened the image and deepened its tones. Gray's name and the number 41 are scratched into the back of the plate, a reminder of how studios labeled and tracked their work.
