Scratched on the back of this plate is the note "Sen. Turney, Tenn.," which identifies the sitter as Hopkins Lacey Turney, a Tennessee Democrat who served in the United States Senate in the early 1850s. The portrait came from the studio of Mathew Brady, whose Washington daguerreotypes of lawmakers and public figures were widely sought after in the period. Gold toning, applied after development, warms the silver image and helps protect its surface. The number scratched on the face of the plate and its 1920 transfer to the U.S. War College show how such plates passed between owners and collections over time.
