A half-plate daguerreotype of Henry William Herbert, the English-born writer who published sporting and historical works in America under the pen name Frank Forester. Made between 1844 and 1860 in Mathew Brady's studio, the portrait shows Herbert in three-quarter profile with a full mustache and imperial, and gold toning warms the silvery surface. Herbert had settled in the United States in the 1830s and wrote widely on hunting, fishing and horsemanship. The plate's later transfer to the U.S. War College in 1920 shows how such portraits passed into institutional collections.
