The inscription scratched into the face of this plate, reading "Judge Edwa[rds] Copy," marks it as a duplicate of an earlier likeness of a man called Judge Edwards. It was produced in Mathew Brady's studio, which made many portraits of prominent Americans in the 1840s and 1850s, and gold toning gives the silvered surface a warmer tone and extra durability. The record gives two possible identities for the sitter, Henry Pierrepont Edwards or Ogden Edwards, so the question remains open. A 1920 transfer from the U.S. War College brought the plate into the Library of Congress, where it is part of the daguerreotype collection.
