Andrew Allen Harwood (1802-1884) appears here in full naval uniform, turned three-quarters to the left, in a half-plate daguerreotype made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1848 and 1860. Daguerreotypes like this were exposed in seconds, and the gold toning on this plate deepens the shadows and softens the mirror-like surface, helping the braid and buttons of the uniform stand out. The plate was later transferred to the U.S. War College, which passed it from a studio portrait into an institutional collection. The number scratched on its back hints at how such plates were tracked in the studio.
