This head-and-shoulders portrait shows Caleb Lyon turned three-quarters to the left, his beard neatly defined against a dark ground. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio in the years between 1844 and 1860, when daguerreotypes were the most popular form of portrait photography. Gold toning, applied after development, strengthened the silvery image and gave its tones a warmer cast. The plate's back carries the scratched number 273, and it was transferred to the U.S. War College in 1920 before entering the Library of Congress collection.
