Among the clergymen photographed during the early daguerreotype era, John McCloskey stands out, since he later became the first American cardinal, in 1875. He is shown head and shoulders, turned three-quarters to the left, in a half plate daguerreotype attributed to Mathew Brady's studio and dated between 1844 and 1860. Numbers scratched into the plate and its back suggest it was catalogued before it passed to the U.S. War College, which received it by transfer in 1920. As a daguerreotype, the image is a unique positive on polished silver, so its fine detail and mirror-like surface show best when viewed at an angle.
