Scratched into the back of this plate are the words "36; Murry," a clue that the Library of Congress ties to William M. Murray, who lived from 1803 to 1875. Made as a daguerreotype, a one-of-a-kind image fixed on a polished silver-coated copper sheet, the head-and-shoulders portrait was produced in the studio of Mathew Brady, whose firm photographed many prominent Americans in the 1840s and 1850s. The plate's mirror-like surface reveals its image only at certain angles, which is worth noticing when viewing it in person.
