Turned three-quarters to the left and framed head-and-shoulders, this whole-plate daguerreotype shows Franklin Pierce, who served as the 14th president from 1853 to 1857. The plate is gold toned, a treatment that warmed the silver image and softened its surface. The record credits Mathew Brady's studio, one of the busiest portrait operations of the 1850s, where public figures were photographed. The sitter's identity was confirmed by an 1852 engraving by W.L. Ormsby, a reminder that studio likenesses were often translated into prints for wider circulation.
