The sitter is James C. Stowell, who lived from 1785 to 1855, and this daguerreotype reproduces an existing painted portrait rather than a live sitting. Photographers made such copies so families could keep a likeness of a relative whose original portrait was fragile, distant, or painted long before. This small sixth-plate example was kept with the Ellery C. Stowell Papers, and a family note calls him "Uncle Jim," a reminder that pictures like this were treasured as private keepsakes. The head-and-shoulders, three-quarter pose facing left follows the conventions of painted portraiture of the period, and the photographer who made the copy remains unidentified.
