Rather than a sitter photographed from life, this half-plate daguerreotype reproduces an oil portrait by Thomas Sully, the Philadelphia painter known for his polished likenesses of prominent Americans and British figures. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1851 and 1860, a period when photographers often copied existing paintings to create portable, durable versions of them. Gold toning gives the silvery surface its warm depth, and the plate's 1920 transfer to the U.S. War College shows how early photographs were preserved as historical records.
