Henry Lawrence Kinney is shown in this half-length portrait, turned three-quarters to the right. The plate was identified by comparison with an engraving in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* from December 22, 1855, which links the face to a name. Made in Mathew Brady's studio between 1844 and 1855, it is a half-plate daguerreotype with gold toning, a treatment that added warmth to the silvered surface and helped protect the image.
