Turned three-quarters to the right, the sitter in this half-plate daguerreotype is identified as Henry J. Raymond, the journalist who co-founded the New York Times in 1851. That identification rests on a published reproduction of the plate, and the back carries a scratched "Raymer," with an alternative identification of Raymer from Turkey noted in the record, so it is worth reading with some caution. The portrait was produced by Mathew Brady's studio, which made many likenesses of New York sitters in the 1840s and 1850s, when the daguerreotype was the leading portrait process. Its mirror-like silver surface and fine detail are typical of the medium.
