George Perkins Marsh sits beside a draped table in this half plate daguerreotype, his head turned to one side, while his wife rests her hand on his and her sister, Lucy Crane, stands behind them with a hand on his shoulder. Marsh served in Congress from Vermont during the years the plate is dated to, before he became known as a scholar of languages and later a diplomat. Made in Mathew Brady's studio and gold toned, the plate has Marsh's name and a number scratched into its surface, which suggests it was labeled and kept with care.
