Two girls, about three and five years old, pose for this half-plate daguerreotype, the younger seated in a high chair while her older sister stands at her left. Their identities went unrecorded, but the plate carries a paschal lamb hallmark and a number scratched on its back, and the picture is credited to Mathew Brady's studio. Gold toning, a finishing step many studios used in the 1840s and 1850s, deepened the silvery image, and the high chair likely helped steady the younger child through a long exposure.
