Two women sit while a third stands behind them in this small sixth-plate daguerreotype, a format common for portraits made in the 1840s and 1850s. Nothing in the record identifies the sitters or the maker, but the image shows the conventions of the period: stiff, formal stillness, since early exposures ran long enough that any movement would blur the faces. The record notes only the plain leather case, seen from the back, and the piece came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Frances Benjamin Johnston, a photographer who gathered early photographic material.
