Ten young people, five standing and five seated in front, face nearly toward the camera in this half-plate daguerreotype, and their names were never recorded. The record credits Mathew Brady's studio, which made portraits in New York and Washington during the 1840s and 1850s, and the gold toning that warms the silvery image was a common step meant to strengthen the delicate surface. The plate reached the Library of Congress in 1920 from the U.S. War College, and the number 253 scratched on its back hints at how it was tracked before then. Worth noticing are the rounded corners and the formal, evenly spaced grouping typical of the period.
