The plate's own scratched inscription names the officer as Col. Thomas Staniford, which sets this half plate apart from the many military portraits of the period. It was made in Mathew Brady's studio, one of the best-known portrait operations in the United States in the 1840s and 1850s, and gold toning gave the silvery surface a warmer tone and greater durability. The standing officer and seated woman, posed nearly full face, follow the formal conventions of studio group portraits, when a uniform signaled rank and service. The plate was transferred to the U.S. War College in 1920 before entering the Library of Congress collection.
