Two daguerreotypes of Sarah Allister McAllister Grant share one case: a head-and-shoulders likeness and a full-length portrait taken in front of a building. An inscription on the left plate records that it was made in 1843 at 45 Sansom Street by W.Y. McAllister, and a paper label on the case identifies the sitter. The left image has faded until it is barely visible, but the right plate remains clear, and both carry the same maker's hallmark, a cross in a circle with the numeral 30 in a rectangle. Sixth-plate daguerreotypes like these, kept in decorative cases, were treasured family keepsakes in the 1840s.
