Few pictures on this board show a performer in costume, and this half-plate daguerreotype captures Teresa Truffi full length, turned slightly to the left with her eyes to the right and a small bottle in hand. Truffi was an Italian dancer who performed on American stages in the 1840s, and theatrical portraits like this one were popular then as souvenirs of celebrated performers. Mathew Brady's studio produced the image, and the name "Truffi" scratched into the plate identifies the sitter. Gold toning sharpened the highlights and softened the silvery surface, a finish favored by studios of the period. The plate passed to the U.S. War College and entered the Library of Congress collection in 1920.
