Dressed in stage costume and shown full length, facing the camera, this half plate daguerreotype stands apart from the usual head-and-shoulders studio portrait. Mathew Brady's studio is credited with the plate, which dates to between 1844 and 1860, when daguerreotypes were the leading portrait process in America and theater drew large audiences in cities like New York. Full-length figures needed long exposures, so the sitter had to hold still in costume for some time. The record leaves the sitter unidentified, though it offers the alternative name Ornelius Ward, described as an actress.
