Tom Thumb, the stage name of Charles Sherwood Stratton, stands full length on a table draped with a cloth, a pose that suits a performer who was barely over two feet tall as an adult. The plate is a half plate daguerreotype, gold toned to warm its silvery image, and it was made in Mathew Brady's New York studio sometime between 1844 and 1860. Stratton was promoted by P. T. Barnum from 1842 onward, and Brady photographed him during the years when his celebrity was at its height. Today the plate survives as part of the Library of Congress daguerreotype collection.
