Full-length daguerreotypes were less common than close head-and-shoulders studies, and this half-plate shows John Ross standing, facing the camera, beside a small table. The dates in the record, 1790 to 1866, match the Cherokee leader who served as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation and led his people through the forced removal west in the 1830s. Made around 1850, the portrait captures a prominent figure in the middle of the nineteenth century, when Cherokee leaders were still contending with the consequences of removal.
