A Virginia-born statesman sits nearly facing the lens in this half-length study of John Y. Mason. Mason served as attorney general and then secretary of the navy under President John Tyler, and he later represented the United States as minister to France from 1853 until his death in Paris in 1859. The plate is a half-plate daguerreotype from Mathew Brady's studio, made sometime between 1844 and 1860, and its gold toning warms the silver image. Mason's name is scratched into the back of the plate, and the record notes that the picture was transferred to the U.S. War College in 1920.
