The spectacles and full mustache set this half-length portrait apart, with the sitter turned nearly to face the camera. It is a half-plate daguerreotype, gold toned to deepen its tones and protect the silvery surface, and it was produced in the studio of Mathew Brady between 1844 and 1860. The sitter was identified by comparison with an 1854 engraving of him in *The Knickerbocker Gallery*, and the back of the plate bears the alternate spelling "McLoud" along with the ink number 434. The plate was transferred to the U.S. War College in 1920 and is now held by the Library of Congress.
