Wearing spectacles and turned slightly to the right, Mary Woodburn Greeley (1788-1855) sits for this half-length portrait, which was made as a gold-toned half-plate daguerreotype. The image came from the studio of Mathew Brady, and it was produced sometime between 1844 and 1860. A 1915 publication recording the unveiling of a memorial to her son, the newspaper editor Horace Greeley, in Albany reproduced the portrait as his mother's likeness. A number scratched into the plate, 175, is a small reminder of how studios kept track of their work.
