A morteotype, a daguerreotype sealed in a lead frame and set into a grave marker, gives this portrait of Mary Gideon an unusual purpose. She died in 1853, and the half-length image shows her facing the camera. The monument it was mounted on stands in the Historic Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C., which gave the piece to the Library of Congress in 1994. The photographer is unidentified, but the image was made to endure outdoors, so the protective metal casing matters as much as the portrait itself.
