Lucy Stone (1818–1893), the Massachusetts abolitionist and women's rights organizer, sits for this half-length portrait, which faces the camera directly with a bouquet of flowers tucked into the case. The ninth-plate daguerreotype dates from between 1840 and 1860, and its photographer is unidentified. Stone married Henry Browne Blackwell in 1855 and kept her own surname, a choice that became a well-known symbol in the women's movement. The plate came to the Library of Congress as part of the Blackwell family papers, which suggests the family kept it among its own belongings.
