Scratched into the back of this sixth-plate daguerreotype is the number 301, one of the few clues to the origin of a portrait whose sitter remains unidentified. The woman is shown from the waist up, turned slightly to the right, a pose typical of studio work from the 1840s and 1850s, when exposures could run for seconds or longer and sitters were often steadied with head rests. The plate was produced by Mathew Brady's studio, and the Rinhart hallmark stamped on it points to the commercial supply trade that helped make the daguerreotype a popular craft. It reached the Library of Congress in 1920 by way of the U.S. War College, and its mirror-bright silver surface still rewards close looking.
