A pencil-scratched note on the back of this half-plate daguerreotype, reading "C... Ex mayor, 1852," suggests the sitter held civic office, though his name is lost and the inscription is incomplete. The image is a direct positive on silvered copper, a process that was widely used for portraits in the 1850s. The record credits the picture to Mathew Brady's studio, one of the best-known portrait houses of the period. The plate was later transferred from the U.S. War College in 1920 and is now held by the Library of Congress.
