The velvet lining of this case is embossed with "Root's Gallery, 140 Chestnut St., Philada.," placing the portrait in one of Philadelphia's best-known daguerreotype studios. Marcus Aurelius Root ran galleries in the city during the years when the daguerreotype was the fashionable portrait medium. The unidentified sitter is shown in half-length, turned to the left and holding a book, a pose that suggests learning or leisure. The plate is a sixth-size example, and a note on the seal records a restoration in May 1943, which helps explain how the piece has survived more than a century.
