Written on the back of this plate is the name Beverly Page Yates and his title, vice president of the Republic of Liberia. The sixth-plate daguerreotype shows him seated at a table, turned slightly to the right, holding a rolled sheet of paper that hints at official business. The photographer is unidentified, but the image dates from roughly 1856 to 1860, when the American Colonization Society was sending African Americans to Liberia, a colony it had helped establish. The plate is held by the Library of Congress as part of the Society's records.
