Unlike the head-and-shoulders likenesses common at the time, this half-plate shows Alexander H. H. Stuart full-length, standing slightly to one side with one hand resting on the back of a chair, the studio backdrop filling the space behind him. Stuart, a Virginia Whig, served as Secretary of the Interior under Millard Fillmore from 1850 to 1853. An engraving of him by A. H. Ritchie in the April 1852 issue of the American Whig Review helps confirm the sitter's identity. The plate was made in Mathew Brady's studio, where the daguerreotype was a popular way to record public men before the Civil War, and the gold toning gives the surface its warm brown cast.
