Here a young man in a long coat stands full length beside an ornate chair and a carved balustrade, turned to his left as if caught mid-conversation. The case bears the label of J.E. Mayall, the American-born photographer who ran a studio at 433 West Strand in London, where many Americans traveling in Britain sat for portraits in the late 1840s. The sitter, William Penn Cresson (1814-1892), was a Philadelphian who later served as American consul in Jerusalem. The brass mat helps date the plate to between 1847 and 1850, a period when daguerreotypists favored elaborate studio props to suggest status and refinement.
