Four shoemakers pose together in this small sixth-plate daguerreotype, one standing and three seated, each holding finished shoes or the tools of the bench. The plate was hand-colored, a common practice in the 1840s and 1850s, when painters added tints to the silvery surface to suggest skin, clothing, and leather. Photographers of the period often recorded tradesmen this way, presenting workers as respectable professionals whose tools showed their skill. The maker of this picture is not known, but the arrangement reflects a wider habit of the era.
