A New York Democrat and former state comptroller, Azariah Cutting Flagg is known to us partly through an 1855 engraving by J.C. Buttre, made from a different Brady daguerreotype and published in the *United States Review*. This plate, shown three-quarters turned to the left, carries his name in ink on the back, along with a scratched number, and reached the Library of Congress through the U.S. War College in 1920. Gold toning, common on daguerreotypes of the period, warms the surface and softens the highlights on the face, and the Brady studio's work shows how public men of the 1840s and 1850s used the new medium to shape their images.
